The Sumenep Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD Sumenep) reported on Monday that strong wind during the weekend had destroyed at least 50 houses in several villages in the East Javan regency. No casualties were reported.
“At least 50 buildings were destroyed,” BPBD Sumenep official Abdul Rahman Readi said as quoted by Antara.
He said that the most affected region was Lenteng district, where 46 houses were destroyed. At least four houses were destroyed in Saronggi district.
Abdul said the two districts were disaster-prone areas. According to the agency, there are 21 disaster-prone areas in the regency.
“The loss could total hundreds of millions of rupiah,” he said.
He said the regional disaster mitigation agency was coordinating with the police and military to evacuate the affected communities.
Earlier this year, National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said hydrometeorological disasters, such as flooding, landslides and puting beliung (small tornadoes), would be the predominant types of natural disasters in Indonesia this year.
He said deforestation and damage to watersheds contributed to the increasing number of hydrometeorological disasters. (das)
